Before the onset of any bladder infection or bladder cancer symptoms, there are preventative measures that can be taken to lower the risks of contracting these illnesses:
- Eat a healthy diet. Limit intake of very sugary or salty foods. Also, don’t consume excessive amounts of alcohol and drink enough water (at least 8 full glasses a day). This helps the body flush out toxins and harmful bacteria. If there is a possibility that the available tap water may be contaminated with arsenic, buy bottled water. Eating the suggested daily servings of fruits and vegetables is the easiest way to get the necessary vitamins and minerals the body needs to maintain healthy function.
- If possible, limit exposure to industrial chemicals that are released by textiles, rubber, and dyes. Continuous exposure to these greatly increases the risk for bladder cancer.
- Quit smoking and/or avoid second-hand smoke. The carcinogens found in cigarettes have been shown to be a direct contributor in patients diagnosed with bladder cancer.
- Wear loose-fitting, cotton clothing that won’t trap moisture and heat. Breathable clothing, especially underwear, will keep bacteria from stagnating.
