What are Uterine Fibroids?
Uterine fibroids are non-cancerous tumours that originate from the smooth muscle layer and the connective tissue of the uterus. Fibroids are the most common form of benign tumour found in females, which most frequently occur during the advanced stages of a woman’s reproductive cycle.

While fibroids are, by and large, asymptomatic, they can grow and cause heavy and painful menstrual cycles, as well as discomfort during sexual intercourse. Another irritation caused by fibroids is the need visit the bathroom more frequently.

Prevalence rates of Uterine Fibroids
According to a study by Wallach in 2004, uterine fibroids affect 20-40% of women, so, if you are suffering from fibroids, you are not suffering alone.

Symptoms of fibroids include

  • Heavy bleeding (to such a degree as to cause anaemia) or painful menstrual cycles.
  • Feeling ‘full’ in the pelvic/lower stomach area.
  • Swelling of the lower abdomen.
  • Feeling the need to urinate, often.
  • Discomfort during sexual intercourse
  • Pain in the lower back region.

What Causes Fibroids?
The exact cause of fibroids is unknown, however, we do know that that they are hormonal (being related to oestrogen and progesterone levels) because they grow during pregnancy and shrink with a course of anti-hormone medicine. We also know that as a woman enters her 30s and 40s she is more likely to suffer from fibroids than a woman in her 20s (fibroids stop completely at the menopause). If family members have in the past suffered from fibroids, there are increased risks of this being shared by a fibroid sufferer. For example if a woman’s mother had fibroids, the chances of the daughter suffering from fibroids are about three times higher than the average. Women that are overweight are also at risk of suffering from uterine fibroids, and for very heavy women, the risk is increases by two to three times the average.

How to stop Uterine Fibroids?
Although there are hereditary factors that play a role in determining whether a woman suffers from fibroids of not, a healthy diet, which includes a low intake of red meat and a high volume of green vegetables, are considered good preventative measures.
